Equatorial Guinea
FRANCE’S highest court of appeal, the Cour de Cassation, has upheld two lower courts’ convictions of Teodorin Nguema Obiang Mangue, the vice president of Equatorial Guinea and eldest son of the president, for embezzlement and laundering public funds, Human Rights Watch and EG Justice said this week.
The decision ends more than a decade of litigation and cements France’s control over about €150 million (R2.6 billion) in stolen assets, which must be returned to Equatorial Guinea for the benefit of those deprived of the resources.
