HERALD Ex-govt worker, 77, who failed Grade 10 55 times, to write Grade 12 |

PROVING the adage that age is just a number, Hukumdas Vaishnav, a 77-year-old retired government employee from Jalore, who flunked class X (Grade 10) exams 55 times, has now enrolled for Grade 12.

Vaishnav passed the Grade 10 exam in his 56th attempt.

The story of this man pursuing his studies in his seventies is a source of inspiration for many.

Born in 1945 in Sardargarh village, Hukumdas passed classes 1 to 8 from Teekhi village.

In 1962, he took the Grade 10 examination for the first time.

He failed and was granted the chance to write a supplementary exam, which he also failed.

His friends challenged him, saying he would never pass his class X exam.

Accepting the challenge, Hukumdas vowed that one day he would.

Vaishnav said that he became an employee in the Ground Water Department.

He left regular studies and started appearing for examinations as a volunteer.

In 2005, he retired from the Treasury Department. Until 2010, he appeared for the class X exam organised by the Board of Secondary Education 48 times.

After that, he tried from the State Open Board and finally in 2019, he passed 10th class exam.

After that he enrolled for class 12 in the 2021-22 session and will now write exams.

This week Vaishnav applied for the 12th arts class exams at Government Higher Secondary School, which is the reference centre for the State Open in Jalore city.

His grandson has already finished school.
