LAST RESPECTS

FAMILY and friends carry the coffin of Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh during her funeral in a packed church in Jerusalem, on Friday. She was killed in an Israeli raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Israeli police officers had earlier charged at Palestinian mourners carrying the coffin in a bid to stop them proceeding by foot rather than using a vehicle, before thousands continued in the procession through Jerusalem’s Old City. Some pallbearers and mourners were kicked and beaten with batons. Abu Akieh was a Palestinian-american journalist who worked for the Arabic-language channel of Al Jazeera for 25 years, and was a household name across the Middle East for her decades of reporting in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. More than 40 Palestinian journalists have reportedly been killed since 2000, with hundreds injured or targeted for violence.
