A VISUALLY impaired graduate was overwhelmed with joy when he obtained his Bachelor of Social Science (majoring in psychology and criminology) at the University of Kwazulunatal.

Shivay Chetty, 22, of Pietermaritzburg was diagnosed at birth with Retinitis pigmentosa, a disorder that causes progressive vision loss.

“Over the years my sight has degenerated. In my matric year it deteriorated really badly. I can no longer see anything in print or write. I have about 10% sight. This, however, has not stopped me pursuing my dreams. I use a programme on my laptop to read. Being able to graduate was a thrilling moment and great experience,” said Chetty.

He said his interest in criminology and psychology was because he wanted to help people.

“I want to understand why people commit crimes. I’m now doing my Honours in criminology. I would like to join the police in forensic investigation. I’m confident I’ll be able to overcome my challenge and not allow my sight to hinder my future ambitions,” said Chetty.
