MANY Durban beaches have been closed again.

ethekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said the City’s decision to close some of the beaches had been taken following its latest round of testing, which found the water to be unsafe.

“The municipality continues to test water quality at beaches on a regular basis, and makes decisions based on those results,” said Mayisela.

High levels of E coli (sewage bacteria) following the floods in April was apparently the reason for the closure.

Just last week the City had opened the beaches, only to have them closed again this week. Brighton, Ansteys, Point, ushaka, Addington, South, Wedge, North, Bay of Plenty, Battery, Country Club, Thekwini, Laguna, Baggies and Reunion beaches were among those affected.

Meanwhile, the umhlanga main, umdloti, Westbrook, and Bronze beaches were also closed.

Beaches that remain open include emanzimtoti, Pipeline, Warner, Winklespruit, and Umgababa.

Mayisela said the reopening of the beaches hinged on an improvement in the quality of the water.

Actionsa yesterday welcomed the City’s closure of the beaches.

The party said it had raised concerns about the integrity of the testing of the levels.
