Somalians to celebrate with a braai

WHILE most of South Africa is likely be filled with braai smoke as Heritage Day has become synonymous with the national pasttime, Somali national Mamun Mohamed, will also be looking forward to braaied meat when he finishes work on Saturday.

Mohamed, 34, from Jilib in Somalia, will celebrate the national holiday with friends.

He said his country’s national dish was Bariis Iskukaris: “Rice is combined with plenty of fresh produce and spice with a side of meat. It comparable to the breyani,” he said.

Tassa Lapisoo, 42, who would also be joining in the braai hosted by Mohamed, said he will be preparing the Bariis Iskukaris.

“While Mohamed prepares the meat I’ll prepare our traditional dish,”said Lapisoo.
