THE South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), which operates in Durban’s North and South beach areas has recently installed cameras in their taxis.

Yusuf Khaliva, the chairperson of the North Beach Taxi association, said that together with the taxi owners, they had taken the decision for the safety of passengers.

Seventy out of 150 taxis have been fitted with cameras so far, while the rest were in the process of being installed.

“We’ve seen reports of robberies and the best plan is to be proactive. Being an operation that works 24 hours a day, we felt it was important to ensure passengers were safe, especially for the female students who use our taxis, even at night,’’ said Khaliva.

He said among the concerns expressed by passengers in a meeting held a week ago, was that if they lost or forgot their goods in a taxi, it was difficult to track the vehicle.

“We saw it fit that vehicles have stickers which will be clearly marked. For example, you could have a 2A sticker on the taxi, which indicates the route the taxis operate. If passengers then go to our office and report that they lost something in a taxi with sticker 2A, we can check our system and see which driver was driving that vehicle that particular day,” said Khaliva. He added that the association monitored the cameras daily and held disciplinary hearings on Thursdays to ensure drivers adhered to road rules.
