WITH just 20 days left until the ANC’S watershed 55th national elective conference begins, party presidential hopeful Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma says the conference should ensure that the party self-corrects before it is completely rejected by the people.

Dlamini Zuma is still running for the ANC’S top job despite not getting enough nominations from branches to appear on the ballot at the conference, with incumbent ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and Dr Zweli Mkhize being the two leading candidates for the party’s top job.

Dlamini’s remarks were made this week during an interview with the Press Club of South Africa on issues pertaining to the conference, scheduled to sit from December 16 to 20 in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

“It is important that we self-correct and we don’t wait until we are completely rejected by the people before we correct, because it will be too late. We must correct now, before we get rejected,” Dlamini Zuma said.

She also lamented the state of the party’s structures, including its leagues, which have been disbanded and replaced by interim structures.

University of Kwazulu-natal political analyst Siyabonga Ntombela described her remarks as wishful thinking. “The question is why now, what’s going to happen now that’s not happened before?” he asked.

“I don’t see there being an ANC that self-corrects any time soon, provided they still have people within their ranks that they know are corrupt and they are still trying to protect them,” Ntombela said.
