CANNON'S Auctioneers have a rare lot on offer in a forthcoming online auction on Wednesday and Thursday.

Going under the hammer is a collection of nine Transvaal Imperial Brass Measures – a rare piece of South African history.

Eight of the nine measures are engraved “Govt of the Transvaal 1889” and one is engraved “1889”.

The set is housed in its original brass bound and hinged-lidded wooden box, with a “Govt of the Transvaal” plaque.

In order from largest to smallest, the measures comprise: half bushel with ebonised handles; gallon with ebonised handles; pottle; quart; pint; half pint; gill; half gill; and a quarter gill.

The lot will be selling with provenance and a letter confirming possession of government measures. The auction estimate is R800 000 to R1.2 million.
